Dr. Osman Barış Malcıoğlu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Middle East Technical University (METU). He received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the METU Department of Physics, where he also began his academic career.
At SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies), where he started working in 2008, he released the first-principles theoretical spectroscopy module for the Quantum ESPRESSO software. He went on to work as a researcher at the Department of Physics of the University of Liège, the Department of Materials Science of Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, and the Department of Physics of the University of Salzburg. In 2019, he joined the METU Department of Physics as a faculty member.
Dr. Malcıoğlu’s research focuses on tightly integrated quantum and high-performance computing and on quantum-assisted artificial neural networks. He teaches the courses “Quantum Computing for Scientists” and “Machine Learning with Quantum Computers.”
He works on quantum computing projects at IVMER, as well as on a project, in partnership with METU-DTX, GÜNAM, and the Dengiz Lab, developing an autonomous experimentation and production platform powered by generative AI. He is also affiliated with the Quantum Technologies Center at METU.
